Daniel Ricciardo is a problem for McLaren. About to turn 33, the Australian driver left many doubts in his first season dressed in orange and worsened even more in the second. However, his contract binds him to McLaren for at least one more season, that of 2023.
McLaren, they have confirmed that Ricciardo has signed for one more year, but Zak Brown, the company's CEO, has used a rather unconventional method to communicate it. Brown also assures that there are mechanisms in Ricciardo's contract, insinuating that there are exit clauses for poor results.
When McLaren signed Ricciardo, it seemed that he was getting life insurance, but a year and a half later, it became a problem for Woking. He won a race at Monza, yes, but otherwise, he's getting hammered by his teammate Lando Norris. And the situation does not improve.
This season Norris already has 48 points, while Ricciardo only has 11. He had his best result at his home, in Australia, where he finished sixth, and at Imola, he finished ninth and took the fastest lap. A very improvable performance that has McLaren in the battle with Alfa Romeo and Alpine.
"I don't want the details of the contract, but there are mechanisms in which we are committed to each other and mechanisms in which we are not," Brown said of Ricciardo's situation. In theory, his contract ends in December next year so he would race in 2023 with McLaren.
In recent weeks it has been rumoured that Ricciardo could end up racing with McLaren in the United States. The Woking outfit is putting a third car on track in IndyCar for next season, and it could be Ricciardo's ideal destination. There has also been talking of Alex Palou for that car.
