The San Francisco 49ers added an important piece to their team for the current NFL season, acquiring Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey for a series of draft picks.

The Panthers will receive second-, third- and fourth-round draft picks in 2023 and a fifth-round pick in 2024, according to a person familiar with the terms.

Carolina was looking for a first-round pick, but San Francisco had already doled out its 2023 first-round pick in a deal to draft Trey Lance last year.

Christian McCaffrey has a salary of $990,000 this year after Carolina reworked his contract, making him fit easily into the salary cap.

The trade leaves the Panthers ' already depleted and largely inept offense extremely thin as a running back, with D'Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard expected to compete for the starting job and Raheem Blackshear potentially in the mix for more work. 

McCaffrey, 26, is considered one of the most versatile running backs in the league when he's healthy because of his ability as a running back, receiver and blocker.

In the previous two seasons, because of his injuries, he has played in all six games this season and is fourth in the NFL in scrimmage yards (607) despite playing for the 32nd-ranked offense in the NFL. League. 

McCaffrey has 7,272 scrimmage yards (3,980 rushings and 3,292 receiving) and has scored 50 touchdowns since entering the league as the eighth overall draft pick in 2017.

McCaffrey's best season came in 2019 when he had 1,387 rushing yards and 1,005 receiving yards, becoming only the third player in NFL history to eclipse 1,000 yards in both categories.
