Coming home is the World Golf Hall of Fame.
After spending the next 25 years in St. Augustine, Florida, the Hall of Fame will physically relocate back to Pinehurst, North Carolina, the World Golf Foundation and USGA said on Wednesday. The USGA's Golf House campus at renowned Pinehurst Resort will feature a new tourist experience, including the Hall of Fame.
No place has a stronger relationship to golf's past, present, and future than Pinehurst, and no organization works more to preserve the heritage of this great game than the USGA, according to a statement from Mike Whan, CEO of the USGA.
"Through incorporating the World Golf Hall of Fame into our new Pinehurst home, we look forward to recognizing the most important events and golf's greatest athletes. To put it simply, it just makes sense. In collaboration with the Hall of Fame, we're more dedicated than ever to providing experiences that foster closer ties between golf fans and those who have genuinely pioneered this beautiful game.
Most of the exhibits presently on view in St. Augustine, including Bobby Jones' Spalding 2-wood and Donald Ross' bifocals, will be moved to the second floor of the USGA Experience building, which will also have a new Hall of Fame locker. The USGA will also add objects from the USGA Golf Museum and Library, which it refers to as "the complete collection of golf artifacts worldwide," to the HOF collection.
The press statement did not mention the Tiger Woods exhibit unveiled late last year to celebrate the 2022 HOF inductee and 15-time major champion.
Before being sold by Pinehurst Resort to the PGA of America and relocated to Florida in 1998, the Hall of Fame was founded in Pinehurst in 1974. The present HOF will shut down in the latter part of 2023 and reopen in its new location at the start of 2024. The USGA began construction on the campus' six acres.
