Mitchell was formally placed on injured reserve on Tuesday
The 49ers are considering possibilities to help bear the weight in their backfield while running back Elijah Mitchell is out for a few months due to a sprained MCL.
Field Yates of ESPN says seven free agent running backs were at the team's facilities as they mulled roster additions when Mitchell was formally placed on injured reserve on Tuesday. While Marlon Mack was in town, Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman, Nate McCrary, Abram Smith, La'Mical Perine, and Godwin Igwebuike participated in team workouts.
The 49ers are familiar with Coleman because he played for them in the seasons of 2020 and 2021. He joined the Jets in 2021 and was among their last summer cuts.

While Freeman and McCrary were with the Ravens in 2021, Perine was also a member of the Jets. Igweguike was with the Lions until cutdown day in August, while Mack played for the Colts before spending this offseason with the Texans. This year, Smith went undrafted, and the Saints released him last month.
Tashaun Gipson, a safety, was also added by the 49ers from the practice squad to the active roster.
