Who will be the primary option in the Spurs attack now that Dejounte Murray and Trae Young are paired together in Atlanta?
Here comes Keldon Johnson. Last season, he showed he was a deadly 3-point shooter, and now San Antonio is poised to give him the go-ahead.
After agreeing to a four-year, $80 million contract extension, the Spurs are now going to treat the forward like a top option, according to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic and confirmed by Klutch Sports.
Johnson, the No. 29 pick in 2019, had trouble making shots consistently during his first two seasons with the Spurs, but after his time with Team USA, where he won a gold,
everything came together. An award in Tokyo. Johnson's breakthrough 2021–22 season saw him average 17 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 39.8 percent of his three-point attempts. His long-range shooting distinguished Johnson, but Spurs coach Gregg Popovich also commended Johnson for his improved decision-making.
Next season will put all that to the test as Johnson will be the top option without many other proven talents in the area. Johnson will receive a paycheck from the Spurs that is somewhat higher than the one the Raptors handed OG Anunoby because they think highly enough of him. If the Spurs are to succeed, Johnson must live up to the hype.
