Iga Swiatek, the world No.1, has withdrawn from next week's grass-court competition in Berlin due to a shoulder injury, citing the need to relax ahead of Wimbledon.
BERLIN, Germany (AP) — Iga Swiatek, the world number one, has withdrawn from next week's grass-court competition in Berlin due to a shoulder injury, stating on Friday that she needed to recuperate before Wimbledon.
Swiatek won the French Open for the second time on Saturday, defeating American teenager Coco Gauff in the final at Roland Garros. She was scheduled to begin her grass-court season in Berlin, but she, along with No. 2 Anett Kontaveit, No. 3 Paula Badosa, and former No. 1 Naomi Osaka, withdrew.
She announced her withdrawal on Twitter, citing "a persistent ache I am experiencing in my shoulder."
"I will concentrate on healing and sleep in addition to preparing for Wimbledon," she said.
The 21-year-old Pole is on a 35-match unbeaten run and will be attempting to capture her maiden Wimbledon championship at the All England Club, where she has not advanced beyond the fourth round.
