Abraham Ancer, a former PGA Tour victor, joined LIV Golf on Tuesday and will play in the second tournament the following week.
The 20th-ranked golfer in the world and seventh player in the top 50 to sign with the Saudi-backed rival tour, Ancer joins players like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Louis Oosthuizen. He earned his only Tour title at the 2021 WGC-St. Jude Invitational.
LIV officials announced that other player announcements and the Portland field list would be made in the following days in a news release revealing the Ancer deal, which has been rumoured for weeks. Multiple rumours claim that Brooks Koepka has joined the rival Tour, and an official declaration is anticipated as soon as Tuesday.
Anger, who withdrew from the U.S. Open before it began due to illness, will participate in the second LIV competition, which will take place at Pumpkin Ridge in Oregon from June 30 to July 1. There will be a shotgun start, 54-hole play, team element, and $25 million in prize money.
The International Presidents Cup team has suffered yet another setback with the departure of Ancer.
The Mexican, who went 3-1-1 in his 2019 debut, will no longer be able to join Trevor Immelman's team at Quail Hollow in September. In terms of points, he was rated eighth.
Anger, who is currently in his sixth season on the Tour, has earned close to $15 million in on-course earnings. In the FedExCup standings this season, he was rated 79th on the Tour with just three top-10 finishes in 17 starts. Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has placed any player that competes in LIV events on indefinite suspension.
Anger, 31, said on social media that he was joining LIV to spend more time with his family and friends.
He remarked, "As a dedicated businessman, I am enthusiastic about my pursuits outside of the game of golf. Additionally, my new employment gives me more time to contribute to the game by promoting its expansion and success in my native Mexico. I could never have envisioned being in this situation when I was a kid growing up in Reynosa, Mexico, and I am excited to see what the future holds.
