MEMPHIS, Tennessee The FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday will have an asterisk that will be difficult for Cameron Smith to overlook after a week full of distractions.
It won't be the persistent reports that the Australian is about to sign a contract with LIV Golf, which he has evasively denied. With a win in the playoffs' first round, Smith will overtake Scottie Scheffler as the number one player in the world according to the updated world ranking formula.
Smith, who finished the third round tied for third place and two shots off the lead, said, "That would mean a lot." We're all here to accomplish that, after all. A major objective of mine since the beginning of the year has been to reach the top rank.
Smith had enquired about the requirements to take the top place earlier in the week, but because the ranking started using a new point system this week, he was unaware that he could do so until after his round on Saturday.
Scores from the FedEx St. Jude Championship's whole field
The built-in point minimums that artificially inflated many events' field strength have been abolished, and the revamped ranking system now employs a new field rating algorithm that considers every field participant.
Smith would get more involved in the discussion for player of the year if he won on Sunday at TPC Southwind. To tie Scheffler, the current Master's winner, he earned his fourth Tour victory, including his victory at The Open.
