After the opening round of the LIV Golf competition at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, Phil Mickelson was asked the query on Friday. Mickelson, 52, made an odd cameo in a welcome video for new LIV commentator David Feherty and his appearance in front of a troop of gorillas went viral.
However, there weren't many details at the time, which led the reporter to ask the seemingly innocuous question.
Mickelson continued by saying that he and his wife, Amy, had planned a vacation to Africa for Amy's 50th birthday, which fell in May, eight months prior.
The schedule specified spending a few days in Rwanda and then traveling to Tanzania; the first stop included time spent at a preserve.
It appeared to be a preserve, but only once a month do gorillas emerge from the jungle, according to Mickelson. We were fortunate to observe them on that day since we got a much better view of the entire family. "There's a wall there, and they come out of the forest and eat some of the eucalyptus trees for the salt and the stem. Amy is overjoyed because a tiny baby gorilla approached her and accidentally knocked against her. All animals seem to be affected in the same way by her. They all arrive.
But for us, it was a significant journey.
At the press conference, Henrik Stenson felt that the story demanded his input.
"Has the gorilla brought her a birthday present?" Stenson joked.
They sang happy birthday to her, Mickelson retorted.
