Anto Griffin's back surgery will probably keep him out till 2023. Tomás Griffin the year and probably the season of Lanto Griffin is over.
Griffin revealed on Wednesday that he underwent a microdiscectomy on Tuesday to repair a ruptured disc in his lower back. He will be sidelined from the PGA Tour for at least five to six months as he recovers.
Griffin is currently ranked 65th in the FedExCup standings when the news breaks. Griffin admitted that since cutting the John Deere Classic, his third straight missed the cut, and his golf game had suffered. The top 70 players from the inaugural playoff event in Memphis progress to the BMW Championship.
The L5-S1 disc, commonly known as the lumbosacral joint, first tore for Griffin in May 2020, but it did so again and more severely last January while Griffin was picking up his dog, Troy.
With the FedExCup Playoffs just a few weeks away, Griffin remarked, "This was a tough decision." Since January, I've struggled with numerous flare-ups and have endured two months of agonizing nerve pain without any relief. It was an obvious choice because I haven't been able to swing a club since John Deere.
Griffin claimed that even though his projected return to competitive play won't happen until the following year, he might be able to swing a club in the next two to three months. After the procedure, he claimed he awoke pain-free in his right glute and hamstring.
Griffin continued, "Can't wait until the day I can swing a club and put socks on without discomfort."
