Browns consider the idea of Cooper Rush
Why can't the Browns consider the idea of Cooper Rush doing well enough to preclude Dak Prescott from playing if Cowboys owner Jerry Jones can?
Through three games, Jacoby Brissett has displayed strong play. The Browns have a 2-1 record so far. (They would have a 3-0 record if they had better controlled the clock in Sunday's game against the Jets.) How many victories over the next eight games must Brissett accrue in order to produce the same kind of conundrum that Jones appears to be seeking to instigate in Dallas?
With two wins already under their belts, a 4-4 record in the games that Deshaun Watson will miss would bring them to 6-5. They would be 7-4 if they won five out of eight. After eleven games, the Browns would be 8-3 if they went 6-2.
The Chargers and Patriots
The Browns' next game is against the Falcons in Atlanta. The Chargers and Patriots will then host two straight games at home. Visiting the Ravens in Week 7. Monday Night Football in Week 8 will feature the Bengals. After a bye, it's Miami, the Bills, then a Buccaneers visit.
It will be simpler to switch to Watson because it's possible that the Browns will be riding a three-game losing streak in Week 13 thanks to those three games before Watson's return. But what if Brissett triumphs in a single or two of those contests? The Browns may be 7-4 or 8-3, what then?
Which is better for the team: keeping the current starter or switching to a quarterback who will have missed exactly 700 days of regular-season action?
Browns may be 5-6 or worse
Watson would unquestionably start when his suspension is over, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski declared in August, according to Peter King on Friday's episode of PFT Live. The Browns should be a little more adaptable and strategic than that, hopefully. They sacrificed a lot to obtain him, and they faced a lot of scrutinies to get him on the team, so hopefully, they won't turn to Watson.
It might not be a problem. After eleven games, the Browns may be 5-6 or worse, making Watson's return a no-brainer. However, given his extended absence, Watson shouldn't necessarily start the next game automatically.
