Buddy Kofoid held off Cannon McIntosh in the last laps of the 2022 Drive2SaveLives BC39 on the quarter-mile dirt track, the winners at Indianapolis Motor Speedway kept growing. In honour of his eighth USAC Midget victory of the year, Kofoid got to kiss the bricks embedded in the retaining wall, which he called "the biggest triumph of my midget career."
On lap 13, McIntosh overtook Mitchel Moles as the leader, keeping it until lap 30. Before the finish, the lead would officially switch hands three times, with Kofoid leading the last five laps, but it just begins to hint at the situation. The little people bounced off and over the cushion ten times in the course of six laps during the last laps of the race, and Kofoid occasionally clipped the wall.
"Others of it was on design and some by mistake," Kofoid said. " A majority of the time, it worked out. I was fortunate not to be a bit. I applaud Cannon. Racing with him was so fun. It was one of the most fun midget races I've ever done.
Kofoid has had a great 2022, winning three USAC Sprint Series and seven Midget races. It was his first World of Outlaws victory In his 16th attempt, and he won a Sprint Car race this past June at Huset's Speedway in Brandon, South Dakota.
The 2022 BC39 victory, however, stands out among victories because Kofoid defeated more than 85 competitors, including past champions Kyle Larson in 2021 and Brady Bacon in 2018, the best midget racers currently competing, as well as NASCAR and IndyCar drivers Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Chase Briscoe, and Zach Veach.
Kofoid decided early on that he would take any necessary steps to win the race held in memory of the late racer Bryan Clauson.
I first didn't believe the track would broaden sufficiently, Kofoid stated. "I just began shredding the fence because I was trapped in fourth and fifth, and if I put it upside down, I put it upside down. Fortunately, it didn't occur. Our victory at arguably the most excellent track in the world was even better than the performance of the decisive point.
Following his victory in the 2022 BC39, Kofoid has now won four consecutive races.
With three laps remaining, an infield tire marker was clipped and moved into the groove, resulting in a dramatic final restart. In the final circuits, McIntosh launched one more slider and temporarily seized the lead, but Kofoid would not yield Before McIntosh could claim the lead for the entire circuit, he denied it and retook the lead at Turn 2.
Justin Grant, who finished in second place last year, entered the action in the final two laps, temporarily creating a three-wide duel for the lead until Thomas Meseraull slipped into third behind Kofoid and McIntosh.
Grant finished fourth, becoming the first driver to place in the top 10 in each of the race's four iterations, despite having to fight his way through the C and B Mains to get there. Over the course of the night, he overtook 35 vehicles en route to a top-five finish.
The NASCAR superstar Larson, meanwhile, had the most excellent seat in the house before coming in sixth.
The 2018 winner Stenhouse came in 19th, followed by Briscoe in 21st, while Bacon came in eighth.
