Rickie Fowler required at least a solitary 11th place finish in this week's FedEx St. Jude Championship to have a chance of moving on to the BMW Championship, the second playoff competition since he was the last player entering the FedExCup Playoffs. And throughout 17 holes on Saturday at TPC Southwind, Fowler gave himself a chance, shooting three under for the round and finishing the tournament at seven under par.
The 18th hole then took place.
After shooting a third-round 2-over 72, Fowler made a quintuple-bogey "9" on the par-4 last hole to finish outside the top 50 at two under, far below the finish he would need on Sunday to maintain his lead season has begun.
Fowler attempted to cut the left dogleg with his drive, but he could not clear the lake. Fowler had around 220 yards remaining to the hole with his third ball, but that shot also struck water after dropping about 120 yards up in the rough. He required two more strokes to reach the putting surface after his fifth shot missed the green.
Finally, Fowler chipped in to tie the lowest single-hole score of his PGA Tour career after missing the hole on his quadruple-bogey putt from 6 feet.
Fowler is in a tie at T-58 and seven strokes behind a nine-way connection for seventh going into Sunday.
