Brandon Beane
The general manager of the Bills, Brandon Beane, admitted on Saturday that he was unaware of Matt Araiza's rape allegations when the Bills selected Araiza. The league office didn't know, and according to Beane's contacts with individuals working for other teams, they, too, were unaware of the allegation.
However, some NFL teams were aware of Araiza's involvement in an off-field incident before the selection.
Araiza was involved in an off-field incident
Before the draught, Araiza was involved in an off-field incident, according to executives from two different teams. Neither executive was aware of the full extent of the allegations that a 17-year-old girl had accused Araiza and two San Diego State teammates of raping her during the 2021 football season. The Associated Press did not identify the two executives and their representative teams.
The Bills selected Araiza
One unanswered query is whether the general managers of the Ravens and Buccaneers, who both selected punters before the Bills selected Araiza, were aware of the allegation before the selection. Araiza was regarded as the best punter in college football last season, so it was a surprise when two punters were selected before him in the draught.
On Saturday, 48 hours after the rape allegation was made public, the Bills released Araiza.
