Don Sweeney announced in a press release: "I informed Bruce Cassidy today
that I was making a head coaching change. Working with Bruce after 14 years will be a difficult decision. Thank you and Bruce for his work and success with the Bruins organization. His track record as head coach for the Bruins is impressive, and we appreciate Bruce both professionally and personally. I wish Bruce, Julie, Shannon and Cole every success as a family and their future opportunities."
Cassidy, 57, had one year left on his contract at the time of his firing. He will still be paid the $3 million he is owed even though he no longer acts as the franchise's head coach.
Cassidy joined the Bruins as an assistant before the 2016–17 season. Midway through that season, he was named interim head coach after Claude Julien was fired on February 7, 2017.
After taking over on the bench, Cassidy coached the Boston Bruins to a record of 18-8-1, leading them to place third in the Atlantic Division. The team lost in the first round of that year's Stanley Cup playoffs to the Ottawa Senators.
Boston made the Ottawa, Ontario native the club's full-time head coach before the 2017–18 campaign. In its first entire season, the organization went 50-20-12 with 112 points for second place in the Atlantic Division, advancing to the second round of the playoffs before being eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
