It's not the belt many predicted Daniel Dubois would be challenging for at this point, but he's on the right track. By accepting a trip to America to face Trevor Bryan, "DDD" is set for the WBA "regular" heavyweight title in a summer that might have been wasted had he waited for another top-10 opponent.
Dubois is entering the complex, often chaotic world of Don King. The 90-year-old promoter won the bids, which is why the British fighter is travelling to Florida, but thanks to Frank Warren's request, it will at least take place at a hospitable time for UK fans.
For the winner, the likely next step will be Hughie Fury's win against Michael Hunter on July 2. speaking toYoLast year, Fury spoke boldly of his title aspirations. Still, Hunter resorted to the usual quips about his status in the heavyweight division compared to his cousin Tyson. Both would be a formidable opponents for Dubois next. Still, he first continues to rebuild his career after the devastating loss to Joe Joyce that cost him his undefeated record, and a considerable amount of publicity, in late 2020.
So the plan is to pick up the less significant WBA "regular" belt to fight the world title holder eventually; that is currently Oleksandr Usyk, although he will contest a rematch with Anthony Joshua as soon as possible during a break from military service in Ukraine.
There are no guarantees. Bryan is undefeated with a record of 22-0, 15 of them by knockout, even if there are serious questions about the names on his record; probably the best of them is Bermane Stiverne, but even that was long after his prime.
Dubois needs a credible opponent, as, since the loss to Joyce, he has easily outclassed Bogdan Dinu, whom he stopped in the second round, and Joe Cusumano, whom he stopped in the first.
No one can accuse the former British and Commonwealth champion of shying away from the big fights, at least. when he talked toYoIn March, he insisted he "want these guys next" when discussing the ones at the top of the tree, adding that a fight with Joshua would be a "big fight."
