Bubba Watson, a two-time Masters winner, was unveiled as LIV Golf's newest signee on Friday.
Watson is not anticipated to participate in the LIV Golf League until 2023. He hasn't played since May while he recovers from surgery on his right knee. However, he will act as a non-playing captain for the upcoming competition, slated to take place from September 2–4 outside of Boston.
Watson, who will be 44 in November, hasn't achieved a PGA Tour victory since last year. In nine starts across the world, he has dropped to No. 86 and has only placed in the top 10 once this year (a runner-up at the Saudi International).
The left-handed player decided to have surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee after contending early in the PGA Championship. Watson stated that he will likely start hitting balls again in the middle of October and should be fully recovered "in a few months" in an interview broadcast on LIV's YouTube channel. The last LIV event of the year will occur at Trump Doral from October 27 to 30.
Watson said he wanted to "develop the game" and liked the team aspect of playing on the rival tour.
It's no longer an individual sport because you have team members.
Watson expressed his excitement to be a part of an innovative new concept in professional golf on Twitter, writing that he was "looking forward to watching how it evolves." The 12-time Tour champion continued, "I will always be grateful for the opportunity given to me by the PGA Tour.
Despite his diminishing performance, Watson placed 10th in the Player Impact Program of the Tour, which is intended to identify the top needle-movers in the sport. Five top 10 players in those 2021 standings have joined the fledgling league after Watson left for LIV.
Given that Watson won the Masters in 2012 and 2014 at Augusta National, seven of the previous thirteen winners are currently LIV Golf members.
