Chiefs were unstoppable
Against the Cardinals on Sunday, the Chiefs were unstoppable. On Thursday, the competition will be more challenging.
On its first two offensive possessions, Kansas City punted. On the first two, the Chargers scored.
Before the Chiefs eventually scored in the second quarter, the Chargers had a 10-0 advantage. Before delivering a simple 9-yard touchdown pass to running back Jerick McKinnon, Patrick Mahomes purchased some time. (Or, to put it another way, he made the sidearm throw appear simple.)
The Chiefs' deficit was cut to 10-7 as a result.
Los Angeles reached the Chiefs' 13 on their opening drive before settling for a field goal in the end zone. Surprisingly, Brandon Staley opted to go for it on fourth-and-two rather than bring on Dustin Hopkins for a 31-yard field goal.
On their second drive, the Chargers did succeed in converting a fourth-and-short and travelled 58 yards in eight plays. On the opening play of the second quarter, Justin Herbert found fullback Zander Horvath in a position to score from one yard out.
With 9 of 12 attempts, Herbert has 97 yards and a score. Mahomes has made 8 of 9 attempts for 72 yards and a score.
With his touchdown pass, Mahomes passed Alex Smith (1,587) for third place in franchise history regarding career completions with 1,588.
