In the same division, another team suffers an injury that could hinder its starting quarterback's season, if not prematurely terminated. In contrast, the 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo continue to wait for one.
The question that has recently been raised follows. Could the Rams sign Garoppolo?
The query has gained greater significance as additional details about starting quarterback Matthew Stafford's elbow have come to light. It's reportedly bad tendinitis, a baseball ailment, and the Rams appear perplexed by the circumstance.
Taking him to the Rams would be a difficult trade for the 49ers. The most likely possibility is that the 49ers will release Garoppolo before Week One, at which point he will be a free agent and able to sign with any team. The Rams might then try to court him as Stafford's backup.
Would they do it? Why wouldn't they when John Wolford is an option?
Garoppolo will undoubtedly be released by the 49ers before the start of the season because, if they don't, his $24.2 million base salary will become fully guaranteed.
While Garoppolo would love to join a team needing a quarterback, the 49ers would prefer to be able to trade him. He would have a lot more chance to receive compensation, more in line with what he is expected to receive this year.
However, the Rams might be a good fit if there isn't a trade opportunity. The Seahawks might also be. If two division rivals end up in a tug of war for Garoppolo, it would be odd.
