The Dallas Mavericks are not being viewed as a title contender going into training camp, despite having one of the top five players in the world and an early MVP favourite on their squad. The departure of Jalen Brunson, who had established himself as the team's No. 2 option, and the lack of a clear secondary shot creator in his place are to blame.
That's not how Luka Doncic sees things, though.
Doncic told NBA Today's Malika Andrews for ESPN that his team didn't need to trade for another All-Star (thanks to Basketnews for the tip):
"Our squad has some excellent players, but there are also many very underestimated players who, in my opinion, deserve more attention. We have a terrific squad, therefore I don't believe that. Dorian Finney-Smith, in order. He has put in a lot of effort, is one of the top defenders, and will score if the opportunity arises. This year, Spencer [Dinwiddie] will play a significant role. Christian Wood is a new player in Dallas, but I believe he will be crucial to our team.
Dallas may possess strong role players (like Doncic stated), but in order to compete at the highest levels of the game, they still need to get an All-Star shot creator. Throughout the 82-game regular season, Doncic can usually perform admirably, but there must be other options when the playoffs roll around, despite how fantastic he is in that setting. Even with Doncic, defences can make things challenging, and he needs assistance.
Doncic added that he is considering winning the MVP award.
Hopefully, yes. The MVP award is incredible. Even though it would be a huge accomplishment and I would be overjoyed, you never know.
We are confident that this season, Doncic will continue to be exceptional and a must-watch. We don't sure how far he and the Mavericks can go with it, though.
