Steve Stricker and Webb Simpson will complete the backroom crew for the matches at Quail Hollow next month, according to U.S. Presidents Cup skipper Davis Love III's announcement on Tuesday.
With these additions, Love will have four assistant captains and Zach Johnson and Fred Couples, as previously revealed.
Stricker, a regular in American team competitions, led the Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits last fall, where the Americans triumphed with an unprecedented margin. The 36-year-old Simpson's nomination as vice-captain will be his first, but given his longstanding connections to the host location Quail Hollow, he was a wise pick. Simpson, a two-time champion in 2020, has struggled with numerous injuries this season, which have halted his progress. He is currently ranked 74th in the world, and he wasn't given much thought when Love made his six captain's picks.
Simpson played on winning teams in 2011, 2013, and 2019 for a Presidents Cup record of 5-3-2. I've had the pleasure of playing for Davis in previous international competitions, and he'll have this team ready to go every day, the player added. Being named a captain's assistant is an honor, and I look forward to providing the boys with some course expertise and a kind, welcoming team environment.
Tiger Woods, the captain who led the team to victory in 2019, would not serve in an official position for this year's competition as Love finalized his support crew on Tuesday. Last week, Love told reporters that although he and Woods are still in touch on team issues, the 46-year-old wasn't sure he wanted to be as active this time.
