Shams Charania of The Athletic revealed that the trade discussions have "stalled out" in an interview on Friday when he stated they have been going on for weeks with little apparent movement.
Although it is not news that the Wizards and Hornets are being discussed, the consensus is that such agreements are further off and feel more like a means of motivating the Knicks than anything else.
For one straightforward reason—the Jazz wants draught selections back for their reconstruction, and the Knicks have up to eight they can trade—the team is still the front-runner and most probable destination for Mitchell, according to sources who spoke to Sports channel.
Negotiations remain about the number of selections (the Jazz allegedly demanded six first-round picks early in the talks) and the participation of young players like Quentin Grimes, Obi Toppin, and Immanuel Quickley.
Danny Ainge is a skilled negotiator who waits out opponents and forces them to compete with one another (looking at you, Timberwolves). Whatever your opinion of Leon Rose as the Knicks' chief executive, he has taken his time to develop this club.
Rose hasn't been pressured into making poor decisions or, dare we say, Knicks-like ones. Nobody is in any rush to complete a deal today because there is still roughly a month until training camps begin and another month before the season begins. Things become stuck.
Mitchell will likely wear a Knicks uniform, though. Eventually.
