Last year's debut Camping World Truck Series race at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa was a relentless undertaking.
The 179-lap race on Knoxville's half-mile soil surface included 14 watchfulness banners for 80 laps, close to half of the race. Twelve of the 40 starters were disposed of in crashes.
The series returns to knoxville Saturday night, and something like two series regulars expect a rehash of 2021.
"The dashing last year was truly unpleasant," said Ben Rhodes, last year's series champion. "It reached where certain trucks — and I won't name any numbers or names — would transform right or left into you on the straightaways. I would rather not participate in any of that. Assuming I'm around them, I'll just let those people go."
Rhodes said issues began last year because the track "rubbered up" right off the bat in the race, transforming the soil surface into one like a more brutal black top.
"The track rubbers up rapidly, and you have a lot of holds," said Rhodes, who completed seventh. "When you have an absence of banking and rubbered-up soil, you go sluggish, and that can prompt disorder. You have hard hustling at soil tracks like Eldora; however, this was only a great deal of purposeful stuff. I seriously hated all that."
In April, Rhodes came out on top in the Truck race on Bristol Motor Speedway's soil surface.
Derek Kraus was fifth last year at Knoxville, his best completion of the year, yet he concurred with Rhodes that the race activity would probably get insane.
"It's a particularly intense competition to adjust," he said. "When the track rubbers up, it becomes one furrow, and you need to remain in it. If you start outwardly on a restart, you're essentially ensured to lose several spots. It turns into a battle to get to the base."
Austin Hill came out on top in last year's race.
Just four races stay in the Truck's customary season. The end of the season games is booked to start July 29 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.
The Truck Series is the main NASCAR public series dashing this end of the week.
