Some surprises appeared this week in the list of 42 players confirmed for the inaugural event of the LIV Golf Series Invitational, to be played from June 9 to 12 at the Centurion Club outside London, England.
One of the most important names is Dustin Johnson, until recently number one in the world. His manager, David Winkle, explained the decision.
"Dustin has contemplated the opportunity for some time. He recently decided that it was in his and his family's best interest to accept. He has never had a problem with the PGA Tour and is grateful for what it has given him, but it was an opportunity. Too good to pass up," Winkle said.
For his part, Greg Norman was satisfied with the accessions to his circuit, promoted by the Public Fund of Saudi Arabia.
"Free players have finally arrived in golf. It's an opportunity to start a movement that will change the course of history and bring new competition to the sport we love."
Other names include Louis Oosthuizen (South Africa), Kevin Na (USA), Sergio Garcia (Spain), Richard Bland (England), Talor Gooch (USA), and Ian Poulter (England), and Lee Westwood (England).
This news undoubtedly conflicts with the PGA Tour calendar since these players will not be present at the RBC Canadian that takes place that same week at St. George's Golf and Country Club (Etobicoke, Ontario).
