Eugenio Chacarra, a vital player for Oklahoma State, is turning pro and joining LIV Golf.
The Spanish publication Marca broke the story first after speaking with Chacarra, the second-ranked amateur golfer in the world and two-time defending first-team All-American. Chacarera committed to a three-year contract with the league sponsored by Saudi Arabia, and he'll make his professional debut at the LIV event in Portland, Oregon, the following week.
Since I don't belong to the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour and haven't made any money while I've been an amateur, Chacarra said to Marca that he might participate in this league without any issues (translated from Spanish). "This contract offers me comfort and secures my family's future. I had previously accomplished everything as a novice, and now I will be able to develop my professional experience.
Earlier this year, Chacarera declared that he would be returning to Oklahoma State for his additional year. Last year, he announced his withdrawal from PGA Tour University, saying,
"I am confident that one more year of dedication in Stillwater would enable me to continue growing academically and personally, which will only improve my preparation for the PGA Tour and my professional career. When I'm ready, the PGA Tour will still be there. I didn't play during the COVID-19 year since you can only play in college for four years. If you watched Jon Rahm's interview at the Masters last week, which I doubt you did, he discussed how much better he became after playing four years of college golf.
I believe it will also aid in my personal and professional growth.
According to Chacarera, he wouldn't have dropped out of school if he were in Rahm's situation as a player according to Marca. He continued, "But I had to take this." Sergio Garcia, Chacarra's coach, is an additional LIV Golf member.
They've given me a chance, and my grandfather always advised me to ride the train if I get the opportunity, Chacarra remarked. Greg Norman has taken notice of me. In this circuit, they weren't just looking for legends; they also wanted young players with projection. Since the principle is that players should begin their careers with contracts that provide security, it does not surprise me that new players keep entering the league. There will be those who do not consider it reasonable, as well as those who have opted for it.
Last season, Chacarra recorded three victories and six other top-6 performances, including a playoff defeat at the NCAA Championship. Still, Oklahoma's Chris Gotterup beat him out for the Haskins and Nicklaus national player of the year trophies.
In the past several months, LIV is said to have offered several top rising talents, including former Texas standout Pierceson Coody (who just rejected their offer). Still, the 22-year-old Spaniard is the first active college player to renounce his amateur status and sign with them. James Piot of Michigan State graduated and was no longer eligible before joining the circuit this summer. The 48-player Portland field, which now has two free berths due to Chacarra's commitment, does not include Arizona State senior David Puig, who participated in the LIV debut in London as an amateur.
Chacarera informed Marca that he still intended to finish college. In December, he's anticipated to complete his dual-degree program in psychology, sports management, and finance.
