The Baku street circuit welcomes Formula 1 for the fifth time in its history and promises a new duel for victory between Red Bull and Ferrari. Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso will seek to extend their good run of results.
The second third of the season begins in Baku, an urban circuit that usually offers many surprises and in which Sergio Perez has already achieved two podium finishes, including last year's victory.
The Mexican joins the contention for the world title after his victory in Monaco and leaves the top of the championship more compressed than ever, with Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and himself separated by only 15 points.
It is hoped, therefore, that the due between Red Bull and Ferrari will live a new chapter in the streets of the capital of Azerbaijan, in which the track offers a crazy combination of narrow and slow sections with other dizzyingly fast ones.
The Spanish drivers, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso will try to maintain the excellent line of Monaco. The Ferrari driver got the second position after fighting for the victory with Perez. In contrast, the Alpine driver finally achieved a position that matches his car's potential and now has two consecutive races in the points.
Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc were the drivers who posted the fastest times in the two free practice sessions held at the Baku street circuit.
The Mexican driver beat the Monegasque by just over a tenth in an initial session in which the Mercedes and Ferrari suffered a terrible rebound in the last part of the track. In addition, Max Verstappen again had problems with the operation of the DRS.
In the afternoon session, Charles Leclerc recovered to record the best time of the day: 1:43.224. On this occasion, Checo Perez was in the second position just over two tenths, with Verstappen third and a surprising Fernando Alonso in the fourth position.
