Felix Rosenqvist's relationship with McLaren Racing has not ended; the British team has extended his contract for several years without specifying if he would continue competing in the NTT IndyCar Series.
When the new Formula E program debuts in 2023, McLaren suggested Rosenqvist might be moved there.
With the newly formed McLaren Formula E Team about to begin its debut season in the all-electric racing series and plans to expand Arrow McLaren SP into a three-car team with Felix set to drive in one of the two series, McLaren Racing is currently evaluating its driver lineups for 2023, the group said.
Alex Rossi, the Indianapolis 500 winner in 2016, has already been confirmed to join the team. Rosenqvist is now in his second season driving the No. 7 for McLaren in IndyCar.
Over the past few months, the competition for Rosenqvist's seat has shifted, with the current IndyCar champion Alex Palou, six-time winner Scott Dixon, emerging star Rinus VeeKay, and Rosenqvist all named as potential candidates.
Because of his friendship with current IndyCar colleague Pato O'Ward and his recent success, Rosenqvist has a more substantial chance of retaining his position. He has placed in the top 10 four times in a row and finished fourth in the Indianapolis 500.
The team's entry into Formula E for the upcoming season "provides extra options for me both in the USA and Europe, and I look forward to being in a position to announce my plans in the coming weeks," said Rosenqvist. I'm happy and grateful for the chance to learn about the new possibilities and apply my experience to assist McLaren in getting off to the best possible start in 2023.
IndyCar is Rosenqvist's fourth entire season;
his first two seasons were spent with Chip Ganassi Racing. He won his only IndyCar race the following year and was named Rookie of the Year in 2019.
From 2016 to 2019, Rosenqvist competed in three Formula E racing seasons. He earned six pole positions, seven podium finishes, and three victories.
Rosenqvist was described as "a superb racer, with a lot of experience in many different sorts of racing vehicles" by Zak Brown, the head of McLaren Racing.
As we conclude our plans for 2023, Brown added, "As a proven race winner in both categories, we needed to secure his expertise within the McLaren Racing family." As McLaren Racing enters this exciting new era of racing, his knowledge of Formula E will be crucial, but he has also contributed significantly to our IndyCar squad. He and I will collaborate to determine the best opportunity for him next season.
