Liverpool FC has called for an investigation following violence against their fans ahead of the final Champions League this Saturday.
The security processes at the Stade de France in Paris appeared to have been overwhelmed by the size of the crowd, leaving many fans waiting outside the pitch for hours.
The match was delayed between Liverpool and Real Madrid by more than 30 minutes, with European soccer's governing body UEFA blaming fans for arriving late at the stadium. But the Premier League club said that was "completely inaccurate."
Paris police said some fans had shown up without tickets and delayed access for ticketed spectators. But Police said, "the behavior of the fans at the turnstiles was exemplary and created difficult circumstances."
French officers with batons and riot shields ran from door to door to prevent groups of people from forcing their way inside the stadium without showing their tickets, and officers repeatedly fired tear gas at fans.
However, Liverpool supporters said young Parisians, who taunted the Police and caused the gates to be closed had fueled the tensions.
The Spanish team won the match 1-0, with Brazilian winger Jose Vinicius Junior scoring the only goal.
One fan, 63-year-old Carl Noades, told the PA news agency: "It seems like there's only one door open, it's ridiculous, the game has started, and we're stuck outside."
"It's a shame. They are treating us is shocking, and there is no organization."
Another fan said, "This will be our fault, but it has nothing to do with us.
"There are hundreds here causing problems, and they are not even for the game. It is chaos."
Liverpool FC said in a statement: "We are very disappointed by the stadium entry issues and perimeter security breach that Liverpool fans faced tonight at the Stade de France.
"This is the best game in European football, and fans should not have to experience the scenes we saw tonight.
UEFA blamed the fans, saying: "In the run-up, thousands of fans who had bought fake tickets blocked the game, the turnstiles at the Liverpool end that did not work at the turnstiles.
"This created a backlog of fans trying to get in. As a result, the start was delayed 35 minutes to allow access to as many fans as possible with genuine tickets.
.
"As the numbers outside the stadium continued to increase after kick-off, Police forced them with tear gas away from the stadium.
"UEFA stands in solidarity with those affected by these events and will urgently review these matters together with the French police and authorities and the French Football Federation."
Prefecture de Police, the Parisian police force, also blamed fans who had arrived without tickets, saying: "By exerting strong pressure to enter the venue, these supporters delayed access to spectators with tickets."
"Taking advantage of this action, several people managed to cross the gates that protect the stadium enclosure.
"The dispersion of the spectators occurs without difficulty. No major incident has been observed in the two fan zones."
A Merseyside Police spokesman said on Twitter: "MERPOL was deployed at tonight's match.
"I can only describe it as the worst European match I have ever worked on or experienced.
"I thought the behavior of the fans at the turnstiles was exemplary under shocking circumstances.
