BETHESDA, Maryland: When Lexi Thompson struggled with her putting on Sunday, Gee Chun recovered from squandering her formerly sizable lead and overcame a bogey-filled front nine to win the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
Chun blasted a 3-over 75 at Congressional for the second straight day, but that was enough to beat Thompson and Minjee Lee by one stroke and claim her third major championship. Chun squandered a three-shot lead in the opening three holes of the final round after leading by six at the halfway point of the competition. After the front nine, Thompson was two strokes ahead of her, but her putting issues had only started.
After missing a par putt from a few feet on hole 14, the 27-year-old Floridian's advantage was restored to two after a birdie on hole 15. When she bogeyed the par-5 16th while Chun birdied, the two players were still tied after two holes.
Thompson missed her birdie putt on 18 following a superb approach shot from the rough on 17, and she three-putted for bogey on 17.
Chun's approach on the par-4 18th bounced just off the back of the green and missed the pin, but she made a putt to within five feet and sunk it for a par to win the match.
South Korean player Chun, 27, finished her opening round in damp conditions on Thursday and held a seven-stroke lead. At the end of that day, the margin had shrunk to five, but it was still equal to the most significant 18-hole information in women's major history.
At the center stage, she held a six-stroke lead and had a three-stroke lead going into Sunday. Her final score was five-under 283.
Chun won her maiden major at the U.S. Women's Open in 2015; the following year, she added the Evian Championship in France.
