At the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, Spain will face bitter rival Germany in Group E. Japan, who finished second at the 2019 Asian Cup, and Costa Rica, who won the intercontinental playoff, will join them.
The result of the draw has led to a replay of the semifinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, in which Spain won the championship after a Carles Puyol goal advanced them to the Johannesburg final.
Japan will have a chance to go to the knockout Round after qualifying for the World Cup's last 16 on three of the previous five occasions.
In the intercontinental playoff on June 14, Costa Rica defeated New Zealand 1-0 to claim the final spot in Group E. On November 23, the Los Ticos will face Luis Enrique's Spain to begin their World Cup campaign.
In Round 16, each of the two teams from Group E that advance would play a group from Group F.

Each nation will face the other three teams in a round-robin manner as the four teams chosen for the group. The three group stage matches count toward the group rankings; a win earns three points, a tie earns one, and a loss earns none.
According to total points, the top two teams from each group proceed to the single-game knockouts. Goal differential comes first as a tiebreaker when teams are deadlocked on issues, then goals scored. Another set of tiebreakers is used if teams are also deadlocked in those areas.
Draw for World Cup Group E
The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be held in Qatar, and Spain will compete against Germany, Japan, and Costa Rica. In preparation for the World Cup, here is a brief overview of each squad in Group E.
Spain
As they prepare for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Spain is still in a transitional stage as they try to finally repeat the success they last experienced on the international scene at the 2010 World Cup.
The emergence of players like Pedri, Ferran Torres, and Ansu Fati is encouraging for the future, but it is unclear whether Spain will have the strength to compete in Qatar at the highest level.
Further encouraging development is the La Roja's Nations League run, where France only defeated them in the championship game.
With a focus on innovation, coach Luis Enrique hasn't been hesitant to leave out marquee players like David de Gea and Sergio Busquets from recent lineups. This will likely make Spain incredibly difficult to defend against.

Germany
Germany will compete in Group E of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
As they enter a big tournament without Joachim Low for the first time in over two decades, Germany will be eager to atone for their disastrous performance when attempting to defend their championship at the 2018 World Cup.
When Die Mannschaft mapped out a path to the semifinals on home soil in 2006, Low assisted Jurgen Klinsmann before starting his celebrated 15-year head coaching spell.
Germany winning their fourth global championship in Brazil in 2014 was the era's pinnacle. After Low's poor European Championship run last year, his longtime assistant Hansi Flick will head up an exciting new generation eager to succeed.

Japan
The national squad of Japan has never advanced past the Round of 16 in a World Cup, but they will be hoping to have a successful tournament this time.
Their team has a lot of experience, but it also has some promising young players, such as Takefusa Kubo, a winger on loan from Real Madrid who plays for Mallorca. Additionally, Japan has players with Premier League experience, and Takehiro Tomiyasu of Arsenal and Takumi Minamino of Liverpool are well-known to fans worldwide.
Japan's tournament preparations have gone well; the Samurai Blue automatically defeated Australia's bid to qualify in the AFC area. However, it is still unclear how Samurai Blue will perform while facing higher competition.
