As they try to defend their championship in Qatar, the defending World Cup champions, France, will play in a friendly and manageable group.
The world champions were drawn against Denmark, Tunisia, and the winner of the intercontinental playoff, Australia, who defeated Peru in a penalty shootout to book a trip to Qatar on April 1. To get the chance to play Peru, the Australians had to beat the United Arab Emirates in a previous playoff six days prior.
Les Bleus, led by Didier Deschamps, will face Australia in the tournament's opening match, and they are the solid betting market's pick to go to the knockout rounds.
In Round 16, each of the two teams from Group D that advance would play a group from Group C.

Each nation will face the other three teams in a round-robin manner as the four teams chosen for the group. The three group stage matches count toward the group rankings; a win earns three points, a tie earns one, and a loss earns none.
According to total points, the top two teams from each group proceed to the single-game knockouts. Goal differential comes first as a tiebreaker when teams are deadlocked on issues, then goals scored. Another set of tiebreakers is used if teams are deadlocked in those areas.
Draw for World Cup Group D
France
France, the 2018 World Cup champions, will be motivated to defend their title, but they will need to perform far better than they did at Euro 2020, where Switzerland eliminated them in the Round of 16.
The talented team led by Didier Deschamps has plenty of international experience, and if superstar Kylian Mbappe is at his best, it could make all the difference for Les Bleus.
France defeated Spain to win the 2020–2021 UEFA Nations League, and if they can play as a unit, they will undoubtedly be among the top candidates for victory in Qatar.

Australia
The Socceroos defeated Peru in a penalty shootout on June 13 to claim the final spot in Group D in a single-elimination FIFA intercontinental playoff. To have the opportunity to face Peru for a berth in the World Cup, Australia had to win a separate Asian qualifying playoff against the United Arab Emirates by a score of 2-1 six days earlier.
Australia salvaged a qualifying campaign with a promising beginning (11 straight victories), but that faltered after losses to Saudi Arabia. Japan ended their chances of automatic qualification and sent them on the playoff route.
Since the turn of the century, the Socceroos have participated in every World Cup, making it to the tournament five times in a row.

Denmark
To capitalize on a solid performance at Euro 2020, Denmark may be the subject of one of the World Cup's most tragic and emotionally stirring stories.
That competition got off to a horrible start when Christian Eriksen, their talisman, had a heart collapse during their opening loss to Finland in Copenhagen. Thankfully, the playmaker recovered, and his teammates rallied heroically in his place to advance to the semi-finals, where they narrowly lost to England in extra time.
Amazingly, Eriksen recently returned to playing in the Premier League for Brentford after installing an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
After being called up to the national squad, he scored in the 3-0 victories over Serbia in March and the friendly loss to the Netherlands. Despite all the odds, he had a chance to shine on the grandest platform once more by joining the dynamic team of Kasper Hjulmand.

Tunisia
With a victory over Mali in the final World Cup qualifying round, Tunisia qualified for its second consecutive World Cup and secured a spot in the tournament's finals. The North Africans hope to get to the knockout rounds for the first time.
Most of the team is located in Europe, with Wahbi Khazri of Saint-Etienne serving as the primary creator. Manchester United prospect Hannibal Mejbri is another name to keep an eye out for as he may be in line for a breakthrough campaign.
With coach Jalal Kadri in charge, the Eagles of Carthage are starting a new era in time for the World Cup 2022. In January, the Tunisian Football Federation appointed Kadri, a former assistant, to head coach, taking Mondher Bebaier's place.
