After four wins in the first seven races of the Formula One season, Max Verstappen is the PointsBet Sportsbook betting favourite to win the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix by 65 points over Charles Leclerc. Verstappen's odds have dropped to +120 from +140 at the start.
After starting fourth on the narrow Monaco Grand Prix circuit and finishing third last week, Verstappen ran near the end of a race for the first time in 2022 and did not win it. In Monte Carlo, he finished one spot ahead of Leclerc.
Despite his success elsewhere, Verstappen has struggled in Azerbaijan, where he has no podiums and only one top-five finish. His other three results were all outside the top 15.
In looking at American Odds, one approach is to move the decimal point two positions to the left. That will tell a bettor how much they will win on a $1 bet; therefore, Verstappen's return on investment for the race this week is $1.20. A chance of +300 is the same as 3/1 for gamblers who prefer fractional odds.
Leclerc has fared slightly better in Azerbaijan. While he has yet to finish on the podium on that circuit, his worst finish was sixth in his debut in 2018. On the heels of Monte Carlo last year, he earned his second consecutive pole and finished fourth in the race. This week, Leclerc is a +185 favourite to win outright.
Sergio Perez, the victor of the Monaco Grand Prix last week, is ranked third at +625. Perez, who started sixth, is the defending winner of the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and his victory last week. In five starts on this course, Perez has three podium finishes.
Max Verstappen is this week's PointsBet Sportsbook of the Week after winning four of the first seven races of the Formula One season.
Verstappen's is now listed at +120, down from +140 at the start.
After starting fourth on the narrow Monaco Grand Prix circuit and finishing third last week, Verstappen ran near the end of a race for the first time in 2022 and did not win it. In Monte Carlo, he finished one spot ahead of Leclerc, extending his Driver's Points advantage to nine as the two finished within one position of each other.
Carlos Sainz Jr., Leclerc's Ferrari teammate, is ranked fourth with a line of +850. Last week's runner-up, Sainz, pushed Perez hard in the closing circuits before crossing the finish line 1.15 seconds later. Sainz had a four-race top-10 streak in Azerbaijan coming into this race.
The fifth-place finisher this week is George Russell, with a line of +2500, putting him ahead of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. Russell finished fifth in Monaco last week but could not complete the 2021 race in Baku due to a gearbox failure. He finished 15th in his only other start on this course, two laps behind the leaders.
With a line of +3000, Hamilton is just outside the top five. Hamilton has only one podium finish in 2022, which occurred in the season opener in Bahrain. Hamilton won this race in 2018, and he finished second the following year. He finished 15th in 2021, the first time he had finished outside of the top five in five races.
