Huset's Speedway in Brandon, South Dakota, Carson Macedo, driving the No. 41 Jason Johnson Racing car, won the 35-lap feature, precisely four years to the day after Johnson passed away in a sprint car accident at Beaver Dam Raceway in Wisconsin.
Notably, Johnson crashed through a billboard in Turn 3 four years ago while battling for the lead.
Johnson joined the World of Outlaws full-time in 2016 after competing with them part-time for 15 years. He made steady improvement, winning eight times in the two and a half years before his passing.
Jason Johnson remained the team's driving force even after the team's ownership changed, thanks to his wife, Bobbi.
In a press release, Macedo stated, "I guess I had a co-pilot in there tonight." Four years after we lost Jason, winning tonight on June 24 is exceptional. I'm fortunate to carry on honoring his legacy with these guys because he was an amazing man who established a fantastic team.
It took Macedo some time to pursue the lead after starting fifth. Riley Goodno, a rookie, started on the pole and led the first eight laps until being passed by Brian Brown, who continued to hold the lead until lap 32.
I was hustling, possibly too hard, and once I got behind Brown, Macedo admitted. Finally able to control my emotions, I set up that large slider on him in Turns 1 and 2. This week's auction is for a large sum of money, so even though it was a great flyer to toss, I had to give it a shot. After this place having my number for so long, it feels fantastic just now to earn a win there.
Macedo's career-high 23rd victory brought him to within 12 points of championship leader Brad Sweet, who placed 11th on Friday. The success also guaranteed Macedo a spot in the $100,000 Huset's High Bank Nationals, which will cap off the four-day show on Saturday night.
Brown managed to finish second.
Another milestone was present in the race on Friday night. The last three racing nights saw a driver score his first podium finish.
Kasey Kahne and Spencer Bayston engaged in a duel on the first night, with Kahne leading for 23 laps before finishing a career-high third.
Buddy Kofoid achieved his first podium finish and maiden victory in the Outlaws on Thursday night.
Goodno's third-place showing on Friday night marked his debut on the podium.
