BOX SCORE
The American men's rugby player's Olympic medal aspirations were dashed in a semifinal round loss to Great Britain on Tuesday.
The American Eagles squandered a 21-0 advantage after seven minutes, as a Stephen Tomasin yellow card – which reduced the Americans to six men for the remainder of the game – enabled the British to rebound for a 26-21 triumph.
The United States outpaced and outmuscled Great Britain for the entire first half. Danny Barrett scored a try inside the first two minutes to put the Eagles up, and Perry Baker added two more tries in the first half.
With just an Ollie Lindsay-Hague touchdown in the final sequence of the first half, Great Britain regained some momentum.
After Tomasin was sent off at the start of the second half, Great Britain was in all-out attack mode. In three and a half minutes, they scored three tries to take the lead and move to the final round, where they should face New Zealand.
The Olympic tournament for the United States is still ongoing. They play Canada in a playoff matchup on Wednesday to determine the final standings.
New Zealand defeated Canada 21-10, Argentina defeated South Africa 19-14, and Fiji defeated Australia 19-0 in the remaining quarterfinal matches.
