The duels simultaneously, with a clear objective: to be the champion of England. Only one of them could be the one to bask in glory, which is why both Liverpool and Manchester City did everything possible for the crown.
But it was Manchester City who appealed to their history and a new comeback, in a year in which what was done by Kun Aguero was remembered, to win the Premier League title.
Opportunities at both stadiums came early, but a joy appeared at City's stadium within minutes. An assist from Raul Jimenez for Pedro Neto, and he scored on the rival's court.
Silence reigned in Merseyside, and excitement exploded at Etihad. And so it went on for several more minutes. It seemed that the Premier was painted sky blue.
But Sadio Mane, at 24, tied the match at Anfield. The tie was not enough for them because they needed to win. But part of the task was already done.
The City's attempts, in their commitment, remained at that. Neither Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, nor Riyad Mahrez could.
Red seemed to fill the league. A header from Matthew Cash opened the scoring for Aston Villa. Anfield exploded again, but it didn't help them. They had to win yes or yes.
With a draw between Liverpool and Wolves, in addition to a momentary defeat for City, the Premier was not defined.
The second half came for both sides. Jurgen Klopp sent all the artillery, including Mohamed Salah, who seemed to be saved for the Champions League final.
Mane scored, and the league seemed red, but the VAR said otherwise. He annulled the offside goal, and everything remained the same.
A former network seemed to help his former team with one more nail to the City box. Philippe Coutinho lowered the ball in a significant way, cut, finished off, and used the 2-0 for the Villains.
However, the changes appeared. Ilkay Gundogan came in, and everything changed. The City's attacks were constant until the can was opened.
At Anfield, they suspected what was coming. Despite also going to the front, they could beat the goal, neither from José Sá nor John Ruddy, who entered for the second half.
Gundogan scored the first at 76 minutes; two minutes later, Rodri, with a great shot, but the tie at two goals. And it was Gundogan himself who closed the pincer after a cross to turn the score around in the 81st minute.
In Merseyside, they found out quickly, and it no longer mattered how many strikers Klopp put in to score a goal. With a win on the other front, the Premier is blue.
Mohamed Salah is at 84, but the Reds are ahead. But this no longer mattered for the three goals at Etihad.
The tension continued until the end, as an error could change the situation for both teams. Robertson increased the advantage, but they needed the help of Villa to win.
In the end, everything was painted blue. The City stayed with the league, there was an invasion of the field, and the blue part of the City celebrated again, obtaining the crown.
