RESULT STATS
After losing 21-12 to Great Britain in the quarterfinals of the Olympic women's rugby event, the United States was eliminated from medal contention.
The American ladies lost in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive Olympics in Tokyo. Tokyo's outcome was all the more disappointing because the squad had made significant strides in World Series competition five years after Rio, culminating in a runner-up place in the 2018–19 season. In the second Olympic rugby sevens competition, the United States was highly regarded as a medal contender.
With two tries in the opening three minutes from Jasmine Joyce and Abby Brown, Great Britain gave the Americans a swift kick in the face. With only 90 seconds left in the first half, the women's Eagles trailed 14-0 before they could even touch the field.
The United States had the ball to begin the second half but could not move it past their end.
Joyce overpowered Kristi Kirche following a turnover to score Great Britain's third try and increase the margin to 21-0.
The Americans marched down the field for a Kirche score with 2:30 left in the game, but Nicole Heavirland failed to convert, ending any chance of an American comeback.
Naya Tapper's goal at the end of regulation improved the score, but Great Britain won and advanced to the semifinals.
