In the No. 3 car, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt's grandson, won the pole for the Xfinity Series race at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday.
It's the 32-year-136th old's series start, and it's his first career Xfinity pole. With a lap of 182.560 mph, he took the bar.
Earnhardt will race for the first time with Richard Childress Racing, whose company his grandfather won six of his seven Cup titles. There will only be one race in this competition.
Earnhardt always wanted to feel like he was here because he worked hard enough for it despite earning the opportunity. "It appears that I've approached my entire career in this manner." Others may assume you've been given something for free. Don't get me wrong: having the last name makes it easier to sell sponsorship. Since the beginning, it's been nonstop.
"At RCR, we have to race in the three-car because that's something I've always wanted to do." I can assure you that it's not been easy. I've been lucky enough to be offered countless opportunities throughout my racing career. Because they don't come easily, I'll be eternally grateful for them."
It's incredible." I don't know what to say. I am thrilled. It's a really big deal for me. Richard certainly has fast cars, and I believe I am a capable driver, but you never know until you try. It was a success today. Perhaps we'll be able to accomplish the same on Saturday."
Austin Hill qualified second, with 182.351 mph, completing an all-RCR front row. Ty Gibbs will be the third (182.223 mph). In qualifying, Sheldon Creed (182.091) finished fourth. The top five were completed by Daniel Hemric (181.711). Landon Cassill (181.677) will start sixth in the field.
Ryan Vargas qualified sixth for JD Motorsports with a career-best leap of 181.663 mph.
Kaz Grala qualified ninth at 181.371 mph in the first race for Big Machine Racing.
Natalie Decker, CJ McLaughlin, and Jesse Iwuji were all eliminated.
