WBC super flyweight title
The WBC super flyweight title showdown highlights an evening packed with talent.
Boxing's youngest reigning world champion, Jesse Rodriguez, stands out in a flashy performance this Saturday at Tech Port Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
Jesse will put the WBC super flyweight belt on the line against someone who has already held the same championship twice: the experienced Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.
Julio Cesar Martinez and McWilliams Arroyo
Three more world title fights are on the cards that night, as Julio Cesar Martinez and McWilliams Arroyo square off for the second time for the WBC flyweight championship. At the same time, Murodjon Akhmadaliev will defend the IBF and WBA super-bantamweight titles against Ronny Rios, and undisputed welterweight champion Jessica McCaskill will expose all four belts when she faces Mexican contender Alma Ibarra.
Rungvisai was scheduled to face Carlos Cuadras for the vacant WBC title in February.
But, a week before the fight, Rungvisai had to resign due to illness, and Jesse was the replacement opponent for the Sinaloan. The 22-year-old dropped Cuadras on his way to a decision victory to claim the first world title of his career and now returns to his hometown as world champion.
Rodriguez
"Rungvisai is moving to take me to a new level," Rodriguez recently said. "He's a great fighter, but now is my time. You have to take risks in this sport. That's what notable fighters do. They said it was a risk for me to challenge for a world title fight on short notice, and now they say it's a risk to take on an opponent like Rungvisai, but this is what I want.
"I have always said that my brother and I will bring the big fights back to San Antonio, and this is just the beginning. We are very proud to be from this city, and we get that love from the people there, so this will be a special night."
Juan Francisco Estrada
Rungvisai has not competed in the United States since losing the WBC championship to Juan Francisco Estrada in April 2019. His last three bouts have occurred in his home country of Thailand.
I am very excited about this opportunity to fight for the WBC world title," said Rungvisai.
