The Bills have a slot receiver vacancy due to WR Cole Beasley's departure.
Its filler is Isaiah McKenzie.
Currently, in his sixth season, McKenzie stated this week that he feels like he's opening up when quarterback Josh Allen needs him to. Allen gave the receiver extremely high regard at his news conference on Thursday.
Allen remarked that Isaiah is recognized for working hard. He's going to put in a lot of effort and find a solution.
But once more, he was trying to take what he was doing on the field and apply it to his game while understanding the subtleties of the slot position and absorbing the teaching, the leadership, and the wisdom that he had over the years from men in that position, including] Cole Beasley.
Since the Bills claimed McKenzie off waivers in 2018, he has played a variety of positions for the team, including returner. But he is now using all of his knowledge in a more offensive role.
His physical traits, quickness, and incredible toughness for a tiny person are undeniable. Allen described him as a small muscular hamster. But once more, he is committed to making this club successful on the football field, whether as a slot receiver, punt returner, kick returner, or the gadget man he has served as in this scheme over the past few seasons.
However, as you pointed out, that position is advantageous, and he has already made some pretty good plays in camp. His attention and intensity have increased. He's still going out there and making plays.
Last season, McKenzie caught 20 receptions for 178 yards and one score. He has 30 catches for 282 yards and five touchdowns in 2020. Those percentages should significantly increase in 2022 if McKenzie successfully replaces Beasley in Buffalo's attack.
