KANSAS SALINA - For her maiden senior victory, Karrie Webb defeated Annika Sorenstam on Sunday in the Senior LPGA Championship.
At Salina Country Club, the 47-year-old Webb finished with a 5-under 67 to win four shots.
Webb noted that to win a golf event, "I haven't had to make putts down the stretch in a very long time." Therefore, the putts seemed a little longer, and the mouth was dry.
During their prime, the two Hall of Fame players were rivals and were slated to square off in the match. 51-year-old Sorenstam tied the Australian for the lead after starting the round with an eagle and finishing in 31 strokes.
It was somewhat a game-on situation, according to Webb. When something entered, I thought, "All right, here we go. I just had to play my best golf, and I understood that.
However, Sorenstam failed to hit a birdie at Salina Country Club the rest of the way, and Webb surged ahead.
69 was Sorenstam's final score.
Sorenstam stated, "I wish I would have kept up the pressure I started on. It would have been enjoyable, but I believe I ran a little out of gas.
Having birdied the 10th and 12th holes and an eagle on the par-5 14th, Webb recovered the lead in the hot and windy conditions. She won $60,000 and finished the round at 14 under par.
For most of the day, "I believe it was a wonderful head-to-head, and I think we both played well," Sorenstam stated. "She prevailed this time. However, it's always pleasant to see onlookers and fans cheering and fostering a positive atmosphere.
After a 70, Laura Diaz was third at seven under.
