After two fights between linebacker Fred Warner and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk at practice on Tuesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed his hope that there won't be any more altercations amongst his players this summer.
Aiyuk started the second fight after Warner struck wide receiver Marcus Johnson hard. According to Shanahan on Friday, Johnson is currently being evaluated by the league's concussion protocol.
Shanahan referred to that injury in his remarks about wanting to see the same level of energy without the brawls in future sessions.
According to Shanahan, via 49ersWebzone.com, fights are intense, but you don't have to fight to be passionate. Fights are fights.
They eventually lead to other things. I believe the reason we included a man in the process was that we accidentally shot someone, which sparked the major altercation. After that, we threw in a lot of objects like haymakers and other things that damage hands.
I believe our squad is relatively resilient. We are, in my opinion, rather physical. We wouldn't have engaged in a physical altercation last year, but I think most people would vote for us to win that award. Therefore, I don't believe it entirely applies to toughness.
Warner claimed that he has "gone after" Aiyuk at camp because he believes doing so will enable the wide receiver to grow as a player. According to Shanahan, he wants everyone to compete against one another and is okay with players pushing themselves to pass out. Still, they must stop before doing so and endangering the football team.
