BETHESDA, Md. - After shooting 70 in the third round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, Lexi Thompson approached the microphone and made fun of how tan her arms were.
Thompson observed that the sunscreen she'd been using this week wasn't working because she was always sporting a sleeveless polo with her arms baring. She laughed and said that it must have been tanning oil instead.
During Thompson's media interview On a Saturday afternoon, she joked and cracked jokes while grinning. Her tanned shoulders appeared to have been relieved of a significant burden.
Thompson has experienced her fair share of disappointment in major championships. She hasn't claimed an LPGA Tour victory since 2019 but has come agonizingly close halfway through the season with five top 10 finishes. Thompson has now appeared to raise the white flag of surrender. She still wants to win, and it's just that she's sick of competing with herself to do so.
Thompson noted that at the third major tournament of the year at Congressional Country Club, "Being hard on myself wasn't getting me anywhere. "It's not the end of the world if I have a poor day," she said. Even just being out here is a blessing. Recently, a couple of things have occurred in my life, and I feel grateful to be here.
The U.S. Women's Open was in May, and Thompson's grandma Dorothy Fischi passed away the week before.
Perspective is essential, and Thompson's outlook, particularly in terms of majors, has been impacted by losing her grandma.
I've been playing golf for what feels like forever, but I would say that I was hard on myself in large tournaments. Focus is probably a better term. When asked about her attitude shift, Thompson stated, "Like, I have to do this well. It's simply a matter of showing up here and having faith in the process, knowing that I put in the necessary effort. And if it does, that's wonderful. It isn't much else I can do if it doesn't.
Thompson, who claims to have given up looking at leaderboards to concentrate solely on her own game and emotions on the golf course, had no idea that she had finished five strokes back of leader In Gee Chun. However, Thompson is tied for third in the final round, just three shots behind Chun, after making a double bogey on the par-5 16th.
Regarding the possibility of participating in the final group, Thompson remarked, "It's something I don't even want to think about." "I'll be playing as I have the past three days when I go out. Playing carefree, uninhibited, and only paying attention to my game.
Thompson's adored grandmother, whom she referred to as Mimi, was not just her strongest supporter but also a fiery one. As she attempts to launch a Sunday charge that would bring her a third major victory and one that would make Mimi proud, Thompson will rely on Mimi's counsel.
Before Sunday's championship round, Thompson imagines Mimi telling her to "go get 'em, just go for it." She was my staunchest ally. It motivates me to come here and complete the task on her behalf.
