Nathaniel Hackett
Nathaniel Hackett, the head coach of the Broncos, has had time to reflect on what went wrong after Monday night's defeat to the Seahawks.
Hackett said Thursday that his choice to attempt a 64-yard field goal rather than go for it on fourth-and-5 was incorrect, but he claimed that at the time, he believed the Broncos' offense would be in field goal range if they got to the 46-yard line, which is where they ultimately ended up.
McManus even made a field goal
Looking back, we should have taken the risk. One of those things that, when you look back on it, you think, "Of course, we should do that." The field goal attempt failed. But in that circumstance, we had a strategy. Hackett stated, "We knew the 46 was the mark.
Even then, it looks like Hackett is implying that it was the incorrect choice in retrospect, so even that acknowledgment may be off the mark. The truth is that almost everyone who was watching the game and commenting in real-time on social media said that Hackett made a mistake by sending kicker Brandon McManus out onto the field before McManus even made a field goal.
The Broncos have high expectations for this season
Hackett may not have as much freedom as new coaches generally do because he is working for new owners who did not employ him. The Broncos have high expectations for this season, so Hackett cannot continue making the kinds of choices he will regret the next day.
