The 44-year-old Englishman, who was one of the front-runners to lead the 2023 European Ryder Cup before Henrik Stenson was appointed in March, will be named as Stenson's replacement, according to a report in The Telegraph. Stenson was relieved of his duties last week after joining LIV Golf.
Stenson named Thomas Bjorn and Edoardo Molinari vice captains; they are expected to continue in their positions with the team for the upcoming season.
Donald has won the Ryder Cup four times, most recently in 2012. He has also served as vice-captain in each of the last two competitions. If he is named replacement captain, there shouldn't be much of a learning curve.
Along with Stenson, several other former European Ryder Cup players, such as Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, and Ian Poulter, have switched to the alternative circuit supported by Saudi Arabia. Even though the DP World Tour and Ryder Cup Europe have not yet excluded LIV players from the biennial competitions, it is a given that they won't be allowed to participate at Marco Simone Golf Club for two September.
However, other than Stenson's dismissal, Team Europe might not be significantly impacted. Rory McIlroy (3), Jon Rahm (5), Viktor Hovland (9), Matt Fitzpatrick (10), Shane Lowry (24), Tommy Fleetwood (26), and Tyrrell Hatton, the top seven Europeans in the OWGR, have avoided LIV thus far (28). Other top-70 players that might be given consideration include those like Thomas Pieters (rank 35), Seamus Power (rank 37), Justin Rose (level 51), Alex Noren (class 53), Adri Arnaus (grade 61), Adrian Meronk (rank 63), and Sepp Straka (rank 67).
The only LIV-affiliated Europeans in the top 70 are Paul Casey (31) and Garcia (70).
