Malcolm Brown
Malcolm Brown, a running back, was a crucial component of the Rams' rotation two years ago. Now he's back.
But he isn't yet part of the rotation. On Thursday, the Rams added him to the practice squad.
In fact, Malcolm and I shared a landlord the previous time around, coach Sean McVay revealed to reporters on Thursday. He is incredible. Malcolm excels in his field. On and off the field, [he] simply conducts himself ethically. Many of our younger players will look up to him both inside and outside of the locker room. He's just a beautiful illustration. He follows the rules exactly and is a playmaker, guy. He's had some of the most effective blitz pickups we've ever had. For us, he's made some outstanding plays. He'll make a wonderful complement to the space.
Texas in 2015
Brown played six seasons for the Rams after going undrafted out of Texas in 2015. Last year, he signed with the Dolphins. Prior to being placed on injured reserve in October, he had 125 rushing yards. Brown signed on with the Saints in July but was soon dismissed.
The position is really unstable, said McVay. "I believe Sony [Michelentry ]'s last year demonstrated that to you guys. The protections, all the small things that go into the position that aren't simply tossing them the ball and running, just can't have enough men, specifically at that position, who know and are experienced and can really do — Therefore, it's not a criticism of those other two. The question is simply, "How can we ensure that we construct this thing behind them to ensure that we have a person who can also step in and lead and do some different things?" There is no risk of harm.
Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson
Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson are "the other two." In each of the first two games, Henderson has rushed for 47 yards. Akers had 44 in Week 2 compared to none in Week One. The other running back on the 53-man roster is Jake Funk.
