CONNECTICUT: CROMWELL Morgan Hoffmann finally saw the results of his labor on his third and final PGA Tour appearance under the medical exemption.
After a three-year hiatus from competitive golf, Hoffmann, diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy in 2016, made a comeback in the
PGA Tour
in April. He next participated in the Wells Fargo Championship but missed both cuts. Since then, he has gained 20 pounds of muscle, and at the Travelers Championship, he cut the number of competitors (2 under).
After his round on Friday, Hoffmann told GolfChannel.com, "It's been an emotional roller-coaster journey, for sure." Getting here took a great deal of effort.
I forgot how the game feels so different every week, and now all I have to do is play the game and deal with whatever comes up," he remarked. "You have to go with it and be as assured as possible. It needs to have confidence in it because, for example, in the past two competitions I played, I frequently received a cut.
Though the chances are against him, he intends to ride that confidence toward regaining Tour status after this week.
Hoffmann, 32, needs a two-way T-2 or better to maintain total Tour exemption for the remainder of the season; alternatively, he requires a solo fourth or better to maintain conditional Tour eligibility and compete in the Nos. 126–150 division.
