Patty Tavatanakit struggled to hold back tears after earning a Saturday tee time for the first time in a very long time at the Women's Scottish Open with a second-round score of 66.
After shooting 76 on Thursday, she needed a low round on Friday to avoid missing the cut.
Since she placed T-26 at the Palos Verdes Championship in late April, Tavatanakit, a major champion at 22 years old (2021 Chevron Championship), has not participated in weekend golf on the LPGA.
"I went through a difficult period there, but I kept encouraging myself to keep going because golf is bad, and your personal life is bad; it can be quite depressing."
To accomplish that today made a huge difference in everything, and to witness that is incredibly heartwarming. It's like a calm after a storm.
Tavatanakit, who briefly made it into the top 10, is currently rated 19th in the world.
Her latest difficulties appeared to come out of nowhere.
The former UCLA star had made 24 successive cuts before a run of four straight missed cuts coming into the Scottish. During that time, she had 11 top-10 finishes.
What sustained her during a three-month string of missed cuts?
According to the speaker, the main thing was to "just keep believing in myself, because I feel like a lot of times I question the things I do just because of the result," said Tavatanakit. But ultimately, you have to believe in what you're doing; today, it did come through.
