Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard
After Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard field goal attempt in Monday night's game in Seattle, the crowd at Lumen Field provided a reminder about another storyline that threatened to overshadow most of what happened during the first 59 minutes of play.
"Geno" chants could be heard as Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith knelt twice to end the game. After serving as the team's backup quarterback for the previous eight seasons, Smith was promoted to the starting position, and he had an outstanding first half to give the Seahawks a lead.
NFL for ten years and have been working myself to death
Smith completed 17 of his 18 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns as the Seahawks led 17-13 at halftime. His performance exceeded most expectations, and Smith highlighted the victory by remarking on ESPN that "they wrote me off, I ain't write back though." He would elaborate on that idea after the game. He finished the game 23-of-28 for 195 yards.
According to Smith, who was quoted on the team's website, "when people say 'what I've been through,' I think that's a stretch, man." "Saying what I've gone through is funny, considering I've been in the NFL for ten years. Then to suggest that I was written off, I've only been working. I don't listen to that kind of material, which is what I mean when I say, "I never wrote back." Just working. I am aware of my internal resources. God has given me the skill, as well as passion and determination. I don't engage in that sort of thinking about naysayers or similar concerns. People may disregard you, but life is what you make of it. I've recently had the good fortune to play in the NFL for ten years and have been working myself to death. We triumphed as a team tonight because it was a team game.
Smith is "ready for this moment," according to Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, and if it weren't for the strange way the last Broncos drive unfolded, his play would have been the night's most prominent news.
