Geno Smith was in the lead in the quarterback competition when Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had to leave practice due to a COVID diagnosis. According to the depth chart, Carroll is back, but Smith is still in the first place.
On his first day with the club, Carroll spoke with the media about the quarterback battle. He affirmed that Smith is still in the lead for the time being.
Carroll remarked that Smith and Drew Lock continue to make plays and accomplish things daily. Every day, they both perform plays. I'm keeping an eye on it to see if it swings heavily one way or the other. The men are performing admirably. To ensure that the competition is truly fair, we are working hard to distribute the repetitions evenly among the receivers, the players that play up front, and everyone else. This will happen, and you'll see how it plays out again tomorrow.
Geno has maintained his advantage and has been in the lead for all the right reasons. He is clinging onto it and fighting bravely. We have no problems with whatever we're attempting to achieve, and both guys communicate and learn effectively. It is unnecessary to say, "Oh, we can't quite do this with this individual or that guy," because there are no problems in this situation. They have the excellent arm strength, and they are capable of hurling the ball down the field. So start the games now. After getting there, we're in the thick of it now, so we'll see what happens. Tomorrow is a highly significant day. Tomorrow will be an important day
So why remains Geno the top man?
Carroll stated, "He's simply doing things correctly. Controls the scheme, checks at the line of scrimmage, manage protections and works well with the center Austin Blythe. He is also really skilled. He consistently makes terrific throws. I'm still waiting for them to step up, genuinely own it, and string together days devoid of any unfavorable plays—the ones they wish they could take back. Therefore, in a way, both people benefitted by not having the whole day, getting everything done, and concluding the day almost perfectly.
This suggests that Drew Lock may still have a chance to land the position. What must he do to bring it about?
Just remain there, Carroll said. He only has to be active and demonstrate his decision-making when presented with significant possibilities. He's already made a tone of plays. He has a tone of skill right now. He has made a tone of solid passes, runs well, is elusive, has a pretty quick trigger, and is evident in his ability to release the football. So all we need are representatives. To truly discover any cause to detect a difference between the men, we need to observe more circumstances. Simply put, there isn't enough product yet.
The preseason will provide a lot of it. The Seahawks keep their options open when Russell Wilson returns in Week 1. The first two preseason games will feature fascinating starting lineups, and it remains to be seen if the Seahawks can maintain their lead until the third exhibition.
The final response will be none of the above, with an effort to chase someone like 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo if he's not dealt to another club, is ominously lurking over the race. He will eventually be removed. Even if, on paper, Garoppolo could be a better option than Smith or Lock, there won't be much time left at that point for him to enter the room and demonstrate why he's the best decision.
