Start becoming the first central league manager to lose his job this season, Philadelphia Phillies fired Joe Girardi on Friday after the team's terrible
Philadelphia announced that bench coach Rob Thomson would assume the role of interim manager for the remainder of the season.
New York Mets and Phillies were expected to contend for the NL East pennant, but at 22-29, they are currently 12 games behind the division-leading.
"It is a frustrating season for us as we feel our team has not played up to its capabilities," franchise president of sports operations Dave Dombrowski said.
"While we all share responsibility for the shortcomings, I felt a change was needed and that a new voice will give us a better chance to turn things around. I think we have a talented group that can get back on track, and Rob, With his experience and familiarity with our team, is the right man to guide us from here on out."
Philadelphia was the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Girardi's first year, the ninth, went 82-80 last year, and the manager ended his tenure with a 132-141 record.
Girardi managed the New York Yankees from 2008 to 2017 and the Florida Marlins in 2006.
